Hospital Bag – What I Packed!

It’s been a minute since I’ve packed for Labor & Delivery at the hospital. Grayson is almost 5, so A LOT of things have changed in the past 5 years regarding pregnancy and baby recommendations and needs. However, this list is something that I don’t think changes much, even with COVID-19 throwing a wrench in things this year. Fortunately and unfortunately, visitors aren’t allowed in the hospital, so you don’t really have to worry about “looking decent” unless you want to for pictures (which obviously I do…haha) but I also feel like feeling decent is more important and feeling clean and putting on a good pair of pajamas or a comfy robe can make you feel more like yourself. Otherwise, I am pretty minimal and low key for this list. I asked a bunch of you for your suggestions as well though and have added some to the list below!

FOR MOMMA

32 oz Hydroflask – I LOVE cold water and I love the little pellet ice in the hospital even more (haha), and obviously it’s crucial to stay hydrated during labor and post-partum, so this is a MUST for me.

Chapstick – You’ve probably heard it from everyone, but I always like to have chapstick with me, but ESPECIALLY in the hospital where air is so dry.

One nice blanketBarefoot Dreams. I am taking my oldest one so I’m not worried about it getting dirty and I can wash it when I get home.

Bluetooth Speaker– We have the UE Boom and love it. The mini is another great, more affordable option with great reviews and that you will use so many places on the go!

Comfy PJs – Black/Navy and a pair you want pics in (I am taking this Nordstrom brand pink stripes set this time for baby girl). I personally liked wearing a button down sleep shirt the best and then wore a nursing bra underneath (or no bra). This nightgown is another great option!

Robe – Probably not as important this go-around due to COVID and visitors not allowed, but may possible use for pictures. I did not take one this baby and was fine without it for sure.

Portable Phone Charger Many people suggest the long phone cord. I personally would recommend getting this portable charger. We use it everywhere!

Shower stuff – your own towel and shower shoes!

Toiletries – exactly what you would take out of town. Your own shampoo, conditioner, facewash, etc…and makeup so you can feel like yourself and maybe for some pictures as well.

Hair Ties– the obvious. Can also help you remember which side to nurse on.

Hairdryer

Nursing Pads– I took these but honestly didn’t need them because my milk didn’t come in until we got home.

Slippers– This is pure preference. Slippers or flips flops would do. Whatever you wear at home and feel comfortable in.

Going Home outfit for you – I always like 2 pieces or something that is easy to nurse in, and then also something that was loose and comfortable. I remember not wanting pants anywhere close to down there (HA!) I am taking this set this go-around.

Nursing Bra or Tank– For my previous pregnancies, I used the Bravado brand, and this round I ordered these from Amazon that are much cheaper. And so far, the Amazon ones are holding up just as well or better and are a bit softer!

*Any meds or PostPartum care will be provided from the hospital.

FOR BABY

Sound Machine– This go around we packed the easy, portable, and chargable sound machine, and I am glad we did. We would have been fine without it, but it was nice to have for us and the baby since the hospital has so many noises.

Velcro Swaddle– I only used the blankets in the hospital with the boys, but figured I would give this one a shot to see if it helps her adjust better. We loved these swaddles with the boys, but are also trying the Ollie this go around. We still only used the hospital blankets, but a lot of you recommended and used the velcro swaddles early on.

Boppy– even if you don’t plan on nursing and you have one, these are great for support and propping your arms while holding the baby while seated or in the hospital bed.

Going Home outfit for baby– I like a sweet gown option for this and having a swaddle or blanket as well. Gowns are EASY for changing diapers and I love them for the newborn phase. Also love anything Kickee Pants!

Car Seat – an obvious one but…don’t forget it. We went with the Nuna Lite for this 3rd baby, and have been very happy with it thus far.

FOR DAD

For Nelson, this list is very simple. He could have worn the same clothes for days and slept on the bare couch with a hospital blanket (HA!). So, this all depends on the comfort level he wants while accompanying you. Also, keep in mind, if he needs to leave and come back, he can, even amidst Covid, that is the case at most hospitals.

2 pairs of change of clothes

Sweatshirt and socks

Blanket / Sleeping bag

Computer

Snacks

Nurse Gifts

These were not really a “thing” when I had the boys years ago. But I am so glad they are now to be honest. Especially if you get a good round of nurses, they are taking care of you and baby around the clock, and deserve a little extra love and gratitude. I simply found a small decorative basket from Target and filled it with chapstick, hand lotion, candy, snacks, hair ties, and colorful pens. I took 2 baskets- 1 for the labor and delivery nurses and 1 for the recovery nurses. I am so thankful that I felt like every single nurse I had went above and beyond to care for us.
