Back in the Fall, both of my boys started showing a little more interest in riding their bikes, as so many of their friends on the street are older and cruise around the cul-de-sac for hours. My oldest, Crawford, had been very confident riding his bike with training wheels for awhile, but he is my hesitant and cautious child, and so he had been with removing those training wheels. Grayson had followed suit and loved to ride his bike with training wheels around with his brother, but preferred his scooter that he had mastered. Both bikes they had were great quality bikes from outdoor stores and we gradually removed their training wheels in hopes they would learn to balance and eventually pedal quickly and independently. Unfortunately, it didn’t go that smoothly.
I teamed up with woom bikes to try their acclaimed lightweight bikes for kids. Their bikes are tailor-made for a child’s anatomy and needs, and are 40% lighter than the conventional kid’s bike. Their bikes come in a range of sizes for ages 1.5 to 14. Their consultants are incredibly helpful. in advising you on what size bike to select for your child depending on their height, development, and ability. The bikes also arrive almost entire assembled by a woom pro.
Once we received our woom bikes, it literally took my boys less than a week to gain the confidence and skill to ride the bikes independently, and from there we took off! I think the biggest key to them learning so quickly was how lightweight the woom bikes are and helped them feel more confident and safe on their bikes. We also made sure to take the boys to an open space that was flat so the boys could learn to ride and balance well before taking off. Crawford took off right away, but for Grayson we took the pedals off for 2 days and had him work on his balancing first. Once he developed confidence there, we put the pedals back on his woom bike and one push, and he was off! Less than a month later they are both riding on the street and trails with the big kids and even jumping curbs and learning tricks. They are absolutely obsessed with riding their bikes now and do it for HOURS every afternoon, and THAT alone has saved quarantine for this momma. Sure, there have been been some scrapes and bruises from falls, but they get right back on their bikes and get back going! I am so, so thankful for this activity that keeps them outdoors, exercising, and out of my hair for a few hours a day! HA!
If you are looking for the right bike for your child, definitely look into woom bikes! They even have a great upcycling program as your child grows!
